from the West Sussex County Times : 'Restaurant says 'no' to town hall' on 12th
November

Bill's Cafe pulls out of Horsham
(Argus 2:20pm Thursday 11th November 2010)
A high-end café and greengrocer chain has scrapped plans for a new restaurant – but confirmed they are now looking at other Sussex locations.
Bill Collison, boss of Bill’s Café and Produce Store, who already operate restaurants in Brighton and Lewes, said they were forced to walk away from a site in Horsham after facing months of delays.
Horsham District Council chose Bill’s Produce as preferred bidder for an outlet in the Town Hall building in Horsham’s Market Square two years ago.
But the plans were put on hold after a legal challenge was launched by the Blue Flash Music Trust.
At the end of last month the council’s opponents lost their battle when a request for Judicial Review of the plans was turned down.
But now Mr Collison said he has already found alternative sites.
He said: “Regrettably we have had to withdraw from this transaction due to the substantial delays in progressing the planning. It is frustrating that the delays caused by a few people have gone on for so long and that much time, effort and resources have been expended by both sides.
“The Town Hall will make a great restaurant site and I wish Horsham District Council all the best for its future and look forward to seeing it open.”

Letters
in response to 'being held to ransom' article (West Sussex County Times 28th
October 2010)

We have just heard from the Blue Flash Music Trust that
they have received an offer of talks from the Chief Executive of Horsham
District Council. The response from the Trust is as follows:
"Whilst we obviously have concerns that the Old
Town Hall, as an iconic and historic bulding, might be absolutely central to
our plans to establish a major tourism asset for the benefit of the
people of the District, we will be pleased to explore and
discuss options with the Council towards achieving this goal.
We are therefore grateful for your offer of a dialogue."

New
list for buildings of historic and architectural importance provides hope for
the preservation of the Town Hall
The following article appeared in the West Sussex County Times
on 21st May 2010 :
We are hoping here at the campaign that there's hope for the Old
Town Hall being placed on the list described in the article and that this might
grant it additional protection against development. We will be asking the HDC if
the Town Hall is on the list and if not why not as its certainly a building of
historical and architectural importance. Watch this space for a reply!

Horshams across
the world unite
The story of Horshams across the world united in similar battles to save our
town halls has attracted media attention in both countries.
In Victoria the story has been published in the Wimmera Mail
Times. Online here :
http://www.mailtimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/horsham-communities-fight-for-their-town-halls/1817383.aspx
and in the printed addition :

In England the West Sussex County Times published the story on Friday 30th
April 2010 :

By coincidence a letter I wrote to the West Sussex County Times about the Old
Town Hall was also published this week :

Its a small world !
Our Facebook campaign group recently received a message of support from what
would at first seem an unlikely source : a lady called Tanya Kennett who lives
in Victoria, Australia. All soon become clear however when we learned that Tanya
lives in a town called 'Horsham' in Victoria. What is even more surprising is
that Horsham in Victoria also has a town hall in danger of being redeveloped by
her local council.
Tanya has formed her own Facebook group to campaign for the survival of her
town hall. If you wish to show your solidarity and join Tanya's group as well it
can be found here :
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=117644388254119#!/group.php?gid=117644388254119&v=wall
The local news paper has also published Tanya's campaign story and this can
be seen here :
http://www.mailtimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/angry-residents-fight-online-for-horsham-town-hall/1815021.aspx
We wish Tanya every success in her campaign to save her local town hall
building.
....and If your wondering what Horsham Town Hall looks like on the other side
of the world - wonder no more!
